BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell improved its winning streak to three with a 1-0 victory over Central Arkansas Sunday afternoon.
Alex Egeonu's header with 29 seconds left in the first half was the lone goal in the contest. The goal was the first of his collegiate career.
Bastien Oberli found space on the left side of the field and delivered a high cross to the near post for Egeonu. The Dallas, Texas product beat his defender to the top of the six-yard box and buried a header inside the near post for the goal.
"It was a good and gritty performance by us today," stated head coach
Dustin Fonder. "We've had shutouts in two of the last three games and that's something we look to build on."
Matthew Mozynski made a pair of big saves to claim his second clean sheet of the season. His biggest stop came in the 27th minute of play.
Dango Kumwenda found space to the right of goal and took a shot across frame, but a diving Mozynski saved the shot from 15 yards out to keep the match scoreless.
Campbell's offense continued to pressure the UCA defense in the second half as
Carel Kayembe,
JJ Donnelly, and
Gabe Parrish all nearly found the back of the net.
Central Arkansas' best opportunity to equalize came in the 76th minute as Pepe San Roman's free kick from 28 yards out just missed the top corner of the goal.
The Camels outshot the Bears 11-8, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Both sides finished with seven corner kicks, including five in the second half from Campbell.
Campbell returns to action Saturday, Sept. 9, at 3 p.m. against Howard.
