Wratchford goal leads CU over American Friday

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Campbell University (4-2-0) women's soccer team outlasted American (1-6-0) by a score of 1-0 at the Reeves Athletics Campus in Washington, D.C., on Friday afternoon.

Shannon Wratchford netted the game-winning goal for the Orange and Black in the first half. This was her second goal of the 2017 season, with her first coming against Chicago State on Aug. 27 in Buies Creek.

"Hanna played a fantastic ball to Shannon, who showed a lot of composure in front of goal to finish," said head coach Samar Azem. "The goal was very deliberate."

Erin Scott earned her second solo shutout victory as a Fighting Camel on Friday. The junior keeper collected five saves on the day to help preserve the clean sheet for Campbell.

The Fighting Camels played strong offensively during the opening minutes of the first half. Alexa Genas registered a shot from the left side of the box in the seventh minute of play, but AU keeper Ryleigh Brown came up with the save.

Five minutes later, Genas outmaneuvered the goalie and crossed the ball into the box, but Wratchford's shot went just wide.

In the 17th minute, Wratchford put the ball in the back of the net to put Campbell up, 1-0, midway through the opening frame. The Spotsylvania, Va., native received the ball 10 yards out and fired her shot past the AU goalkeeper into the left side of the goal.

Campbell secured an indirect free kick, which requires another player to touch the ball for a goal to be scored, in the 30th minute of play. Genas passed the ball to Kylee Arno from the top of the box, but her shot went just wide of the goal to keep CU's lead at 1-0.

Rosie O'Neal had a solid scoring opportunity with a long run towards the goal in the 36th minute, but an AU defender managed to poke away the ball before she could get a shot off. The Camel defense fended off two shots by the Eagles in the final 15 minutes of the period.

Campbell and American had equal possession of the ball during the opening 20 minutes of play. Starting in the 79th minute, the Orange and Black secured three consecutive corner kicks, but CU could not put one in the back of the net. Shelby Denkert had a point-blank shot from eight yards out off of the second corner, but it was deflected off an AU defender.

The Eagles had numerous scoring opportunities in the final 10 minutes, but the CU defensive line held strong to secure the Fighting Camels 1-0 victory.

Both Campbell and American fired away nine shots over the course of the game, but AU recorded five shots on goal, while CU only had two. Wratchford and Genas paced the team with two shots each and both registered one shot on goal. The Fighting Camels earned five corner kicks to American's zero.

"Our defensive unit was sharp. I'm proud of our willfulness to get a shutout victory on the road," said Azem.

Up next, CU will host Howard on Monday at 5 p.m. at the Eakes Athletics Complex in Buies Creek, N.C. For the most up-to-date information about Campbell women's soccer, make sure to follow @GoCamelsWSOC on Twitter.
