RALEIGH, N.C. –
Quentin Perez placed third and
Allen Swanson took sixth, leading Campbell at Sunday's North Carolina State Wolfpack Open at Carmichael Gym.
Perez opened the day with three straight tech fall wins, first a 19-4 (3:36) win over Davidson's Erik Eva. The senior then defeated Lance Andriani 16-1 (2:31), and Appalachian State's Barrett Blakely 19-1 (4:26) to advance to the semifinals, where he dropped a 13-5 major decision to N.C. State's Trent Hidlay.
In the third place match, Perez pinned Limestone's Garrett Beam in just 39 seconds to reach the podium.
At 157 pounds,
Allen Swanson and
Zach Barnes both advanced to the semifinal round of the championship bracket. Swanson picked up an opening round fall (6:22) over Michael Goldfeder of North Carolina, then pinned The Citadel's Grant Speer (1:10).
After falling to Virginia's Jake Keating in a 15-8 decision, Swanson topped CU teammate
Oszkar Kasch 12-8, and Old Dominion's Cole Smith 7-4. The freshman fell to Appalachian State's William Formato 3-0 in the fifth place match.
Barnes claimed decisions in his first two matches, topping Davidson's Tony Palumbo 7-3 and Virginia Tech's Jake Hart 10-7. An 8-3 loss to Rian Burris of The Citadel sent Barnes to the consolation bracket, where he earned a fall over teammate
Benjamin Barton (0:12) before Appalachian State's William Formato defeated the CU sophomore 10-7 in the consolation round of four.
Devin Rivet advanced to the semifinals of the 149 pound consolation bracket after dropping a 2-1 decision to Virginia's Sam Martino. The CU freshman then posted three straight victories by decision, 9-7 over Gardner-Webb's Taylor Parks, 8-1 over N.C. State's Tony Negron and 5-2 over Brendan Ryan from Virginia Tech. Chattanooga's Zach Shareef eliminated Rivet with an 11-2 major decision.
Marquis Cobbs also reached the consolation round of eight at 197, going 2-2 on the day, including a 10-5 decision over Davidson's Lachlan Rosato, and a fall over Chattanooga's Jake Johnson (0:41).
Next up, Campbell will head to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational November 30-December 1.
