BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell went 1-1 on the final day of the Camel Stampede on Saturday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. The Camels opened the day with a 1-0 loss to Fairfield and closed out the tournament with a five inning 10-2 victory over La Salle.
The Orange and Black remain at .500 with an overall record of 7-7 on the season. Fairfield split on the day to move to 5-5 on the year, while La Salle dropped both of its contests on Saturday to fall to 0-4 in 2018.
Game one: Fairfield 1, Campbell 0
Lexy Head two-hit Fairfield in game one of the day for the Camels, but a triple in the fifth inning scored the lone run of the day to give the Stags the 1-0 victory.
Campbell had runners at first and second with one out during the second inning of play, but two consecutive outs ended the scoring chance for the Camels.
Rachel McCollum recorded the first hit of the game in the third inning. She knocked a single to right field to get on base, but a strikeout on the next play ended the inning.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Fairfield recorded back-to-back extra base hits to put the only run of the game on the board. Kate Robinson starting things off with a double to left center field and scored off of a triple to left field by Makenna DiGuilio.
The Fighting Camels had a chance for an equalizer in the seventh, as the Camels had two runners on base with two outs, but a fly out secured the victory for the Stags.
Katie Manring reached base on a fielder's choice to second base and advanced to second after
Hannah Jones was walked by Fairfield pitcher Destinee Pallotto.
Pallotto (3-2) pitched a complete game shutout to pick up her second win of the tournament. She only conceded four hits across all seven innings of play, while striking out five.
Head (2-3) was tabbed with the loss after giving up two hits and one run across seven innings pitched. She only faced three batters over the minimum, tossing 81 pitches and striking out one batter.
Game two: Campbell 10, La Salle 2
Megan Richards held a perfect game through 4.1 innings of play to lead the Camels to a five inning 10-2 victory over La Salle on Saturday evening.
The Lynchburg, Va., native fanned out six batters across five innings of play to pick up her fourth win of the season. Richards allowed three consecutive hits and two runs in the fifth, but two strikeouts ended the Explorers' late rally.
Campbell opened up the scoring in the second inning, as the Camels put three runs on the board to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Hannah Jones smashed a double to left center field off the wall to score
Bri Bryant, who got on base via an infield hit. Four plays later, McCollum hit a double to right center field to score Jones and
Megan Mozingo.
CU's offense was on fire in the fifth inning, as the Fighting Camels scored seven runs to extend the lead to 10-0. The Camels batted around the order with three hits, four errors by the La Salle defense and three wild pitches.
Mady Balke,
Madison Herring, Jones, Manring, Mozingo,
Abby Perryman and
Caroline Smith all scored runs for the Camels during the offensive spurt.
The Explorers broke up the perfect game in the fifth inning off a single up the middle by Valerie Pineiro. On the next play, Emma Schweigert doubled to right center field to bring home Pineiro. The final run of the game came off a wild pitch, scoring Schweigert.
Morgan Orlowski (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up eight hits and eight runs across 3.1 innings pitched from the circle. McKenzie Peace entered the game in relief in the fourth, pitching 0.2 innings and giving up two runs.
