BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Two home runs by Georgia Tech's Katie Krzus led the Yellow Jackets past the Camels, 8-0, on Sunday afternoon at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
The Camels dropped to 7-8 on the season, including a 4-6 record at home, while the Jackets improved to 6-6. CU went 2-3 on the weekend, while Ga Tech posted a 4-1 record in Buies Creek over the last three days.
Kruzus opened up with a two-run homer to left field to score Rebecca Prairie and give the Jackets an early 2-0 lead.
Madison Herring got things started for the Camels in the first inning, as she knocked a single up the middle to reach base. This would be one of Campbell's two hits on the day, with the second coming in the fifth inning.
Two innings later, Kruzus hit her second long ball of the game, a three-run shot to center field to extend the lead to 5-0. She scored Breanna Roper, who got on base with a lead-off double, and Prarie, who was walked.
Ga Tech tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning of play to widen the lead to 8-0. The Yellow Jackets started off the inning with two consecutive singles and loaded the bases one play later with a single by Kaylee Ellebracht.
Haley Hutchins walked two batters to bring home Draven Sonnon and Lilly Hooper for Georgia Tech. Crosby Huckabay then singled to left field to score Ellebracht for the third run of the inning.
With the bases loaded and two outs,
Caroline Smith made a heads-up play to tag out Huckabay and end the Jackets' offensive flurry.
In the bottom of the fifth, Campbell had runners on the corners with two outs, but could not bring home a run to extend the game. Herring reached base following a fielding error by Georgia Tech's defense and advanced to third off a
Rachel McCollum single.
Lizabeth McCurry was up to bat for the Camels with a chance for a rally, but a strikeout ended the game.
Emily Anderson (4-3) picked up the win after two-hitting the Camels on Sunday afternoon. She earned a complete game shutout after facing three over the minimum and fanning out nine batters across six innings pitched.
Lexy Head (2-4) was charged with the loss after giving up four hits and five runs during two innings in the circle.
Haley Hutchins pitched four innings in relief, giving up four hits and three runs while striking out two.
The Camels head Charlottesville, Va., on Wednesday for a mid-week contest against Virginia, with first pitch slated for 5 p.m. For the latest information about Campbell softball, make sure to follow @GoCamelsSB on Twitter.
