CU overwhelms UVa 16-2 off of five home runs

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Five home runs led Campbell to a 16-2 victory over Virginia on Wednesday evening at The Park. With the win, CU extended its win streak over UVa to five games, with the last loss coming on March 20, 2004.

Rachel McCollum and Lizabeth McCurry both hit two long balls, while Hannah Jones recorded her first career homer in the victory. This is the most home runs in a single game since CU hit six in a 10-1 victory over UNCW on Feb. 19, 2009.

Campbell moves back to .500 with an 8-8 overall record on the season, while Virginia falls to 6-10 on the year.

McCollum hit her first long ball of the game in the first inning, a two-run shot to center field to give the Camels an early 2-0 lead. The Seven Springs, N.C., native also scored Madison Herring on the play, who reached base with a lead-off walk.

The Cavaliers fought back in the bottom of the first inning, recording a home run of their own to halve the Camels' lead at 2-1. With a 1-2 count, Allison Davis hit a lead-off blast to left field, her third of the season.

Campbell tacked on two more runs in the third inning to extend the lead to three runs at 4-1. CU got things started with two consecutive base hits by Herring and McCollum. Bri Bryant brought home Herring with a sacrifice fly to left field, while Katie Manring doubled to right center to score McCollum.

The Camels threatened to do more damage in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, but a fielder's choice to third base brought an end to the scoring frenzy.

Once again, Virginia responded in the next half inning, putting a run on the board to cut Campbell's lead to two runs at 4-2. However, this would be the Cavaliers last run of the game, as the Camels scored 12 unanswered runs to end the game.

McCurry hit her first homer of the day in the fourth inning, a three-run bomb to left field to give the Camels a 7-2 lead. She also scored Cassie Wancheck and McCollum on the play, who got on base with a single and hit by pitch, respectively.

In the sixth inning, McCollum hit her second home run of the day, a two-run shot to right center field to extend CU's lead to 9-2. Wancheck scored her second run of the day on the play after reaching base thanks to a lead-off walk.

Campbell tacked on seven runs in the final inning of play to bring the game to the final score of 16-2. The Camels recorded one single, one double, one triple and a home run each by McCurry and Jones in the offensive onslaught. CU scored four of the seven runs with two outs on the board.

Megan Richards (5-3) picked up the win for the Camels on Wednesday after pitching four innings and only allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out two. Lexy Head earned her first career save after pitching a scoreless three innings from the circle.

Erika Osherow (3-5) was charged with the loss, giving up six hits and four runs in 2.2 innings pitched for the Cavaliers. Lacy Smith, Lexi Mettler and Janelle Zellars pitched 4.1 innings in relief, collectively allowing 12 runs and eight hits.

The Camels will compete in the Jacksonville/UNF Tournament from Friday to Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla., the final non-conference tournament of the 2018 season. For the latest information on Campbell softball, make sure to follow @GoCamelsSB on Twitter.
