Durham, N.C. - Lorenz Schwab and
Dustin Werner paired to claim their third straight doubles win as Campbell (5-4, 1-0 Big South) defeated North Carolina Central, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon at the Dr. James W. Younge Tennis Courts.
Schwab and Werner clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 1 over Gabriel Cucalon and Sebastian Bromley. The duo's win pushed their record to 3-1 on the season.
Fernando Clemente and
Louis Monterosso opened doubles play with a 6-1 win at No. 3 over Brooks Campbell and Pablo Juez Torres.
After claiming the doubles point, Campbell secured two victories from
Gerard Sola and
Dustin Werner to give the Camels a 3-0 lead. Sola won in two sets, 6-2, 6-0, over Juez Torres for his second straight win in singles action at No. 4.
Werner's win came at No. 3 over Bromley, 6-3, 6-2. Werner's win also notched his second straight win and propelled his record to 4-3 on the season.
Fernando Clemente secured the match clinching point with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Campbell. The win marks the Barcelona Spain native's first singles victory of the season.
Ted Williams also notched a 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Maksym Konovalov for his second straight win and to push his record to 4-2 to tie
Lorenz Schwab and Werner who all have four wins on the season.
The two points for NCCU (0-6) came at No. 1 and No. 2. Reigning MEAC player of the week, Theofanis Kontopoulos, claimed a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 win over
Ondrej Labik at No. 1 while Cucalon notched a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win over
Lorenz Schwab.
Campbell returns to action Saturday, March 3, as it hosts Longwood in the Camels' second Big South Conference game. CU opened the conference slate with a 4-3 victory over Gardner-Webb on February 24.
