Game Recap: Softball |

Camels split on day two at San Diego Tournament

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Campbell split day two of the San Diego Tournament on Friday, opening up the day with a 5-3 victory over CSU Bakersfield and falling to San Diego, 4-2, in the nightcap at the Torero Softball Complex.

Headed into the third day of competition in San Diego, Campbell and San Diego boast records of 2-1, while CSU Bakersfield is 0-2 on the season.

Game one: Campbell 5, CSU Bakersfield 3

Rachel McCollum went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Campbell to a 5-3 victory over CSU Bakersfield in game one of the day for the Camels.

Campbell opened up the scoring in the opening inning of play in San Diego, as both Madison Herring and Bri Bryant picked up their first runs of the 2018 campaign.

CSUB responded in the top of the second, putting two runs on the board to tie it up at 2-2. Karrah Wiseman knocked a leadoff single to get on base and was brought home via a groundout by Arianna Felix. The Roadrunners converted a double steal with two on and two out, including a steal of home base by Chris Hipa to even it up.

The Orange and Black re-took the lead at 3-2 in the following inning after Herring scored her second run of the day off of a wild pitch by CSU Bakersfield's Evans. Herring got on base via a single to the left side earlier in the inning.

Campbell added on runs in the third and sixth innings, while the Roadrunners were only able to score one additional run. Julea Cavazos scored in the fifth inning off a single by Paige Johnson to halve CU's lead at 5-3, but the Roadrunners were unable to do any more damage offensively.

Megan Richards (2-0) picked up her second consecutive complete game victory on Friday. She conceded four hits and three runs while striking out five batters across seven innings. Richards is one win away from her 2017 season total and has recorded nearly half of the strikeouts (14) in just two games.

Summer Evans (0-1) was tabbed with the loss after allowing four runs in three innings pitched for CSU Bakersfield. Daryn Hitzel pitched two scoreless innings for the Roadrunners, while Kaycee Olson pitched the final inning on Friday.

Game two: San Diego 4, Campbell 2

An impressive performance in the circle for San Diego's Hannah Boos led the Toreros past the Camels on the final game of the day in San Diego.

USD got on the board quickly on Friday night, scoring two runs in the opening frame of play. Hill knocked a double to right center field to bring home both Katie Vretzos and Taylor Spence, who got on base with consecutive base hits to open the inning.

The Camels responded with a run of their own in the second inning, as Lizabeth McCurry reached home following a fielding error by the Toreros.

San Diego tacked on an additional run in the second inning to extend the lead to 3-1. Spence reached base following a throwing error and was brought home following a single by Sara Silveyra.

The game remained at 3-1 until the sixth inning, when the Toreros scored another run to take a three run lead headed into the final half inning.

USD loaded the bases with a double, hit by pitch and walk and brought a runner in after Vretzos hit a fly out to center field. Lexy Head, who entered the game in relief in the sixth, ended the scoring threat by forcing a lineout to strand three runners on base.

With one out remaining in the game, Campbell mounted a rally, but it came up short and the game ended at 4-2. Caroline Smith singled up the middle and was brought home after two consecutive wild pitched by the Toreros. Megan Mozingo was in scoring position at second base, but a ground out secured the victory for USD.

Boos (0-1) earned the win after pitching a complete game with four hits, two runs and four strikeouts in seven innings of work. She held a no-hitter through the sixth inning of play at the Torero Softball Complex.

Hutchins (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs and seven hits in 5.1 innings of play for the Camels.
