Campbell tops San Diego 3-1 in season opener

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A two-run homer by Lizabeth McCurry in the second inning propelled Campbell to a 3-1 opening day victory over San Diego on day one at the San Diego Tournament on Thursday evening inside the Torero Softball Complex.

McCurry helped lead Campbell (1-0) to a second consecutive opening day win, as CU topped St. Francis (Pa.), 7-5, to kick off the 2017 season. This is the second straight year that San Diego (0-1) has dropped its season opener.

Katie Manring got on base with a walk to open up the second inning and scored her first career run off of McCurry's two-run shot to right field. This was the redshirt senior's seventh career home run and first since April 24, 2016, against Winthrop.

CU starter Megan Richards (1-0) pitched a complete game for the Camels and kept the Toreros off the board through four innings.

USD's Katie Vretzos knocked a single down the left field line with the bases loaded and no outs to score Sarah Stone and cut Campbell's lead in half at 2-1. Richards then struck out two batters and forced a ground out to end the threat and strand three runners on base.

Campbell extended the lead to 3-1 in the seventh inning after Rachel McCollum singled to right field to bring Caroline Smith home. The Toreros went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to give CU the first victory of the 2017 campaign.

Richards (1-0), a sophomore out of Lynchburg, Va., picked up her fourth career win, striking out a career-high nine batters, while only allowing six hits and four walks in seven innings pitched.

Delaney Heller (0-1), who started the game for the Toreros, was charged for the loss after giving up two runs in 1.2 innings in the circle. Halle Kyler pitched 5.1 innings in relief for San Diego, allowing one run and two hits, while striking out seven.

McCollum went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI, while Smith was 1-for-3 at the plate with one run.

San Diego's offense was led by Taylor Spence and Vretzos, who both went 2-for-4 from the plate at the Torero Softball Complex.

The Orange and Black will be back in action tomorrow against CSU Bakersfield at 4 p.m. (ET) and San Diego at 9 p.m. (ET) during day two of the San Diego Tournament. For the latest information about Campbell softball, make sure to follow @GoCamelsSB on Twitter.
