Heino advances at NCAA Championships

CLEVELAND, OHIO – Campbell junior heavyweight Jere Heino advanced to day two of the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, going 1-1 Thursday at Quicken Loans Arena.

Heino topped 16th-seeded Matt Stencel from Central Michigan in round one, 8-3. The Campbell junior led 2-1 through the first period after an early takedown, and matched that effort to lead it 4-2 heading into the final set. An escape, followed by a takedown in the final minute, plus riding time, gave the 2018 SoCon champion the 8-3 decision.

In Thursday night's championship bracket, Heino met two-time defending NCAA champion, No. 1 Kyle Snyder of Ohio State, with Snyder claiming the 23-8 tech fall.

Heino will take on George Mason's Matt Voss tomorrow morning.

At 165 pounds, No. 6 seed Richie Lewis of Rutgers defeated Campbell's Quentin Perez in the opening round 14-5. Lewis built an 11-4 lead heading into the third period and held on for the major decision.

Utah Valley's Demetrius Romero eliminated Perez with a 14-4 major decision in the consolation round. Romero held a 4-1 lead after the first period, and took a 7-1 advantage to the third before outscoring the Campbell junior, making his second consecutive NCAA appearance, 7-3 in the final stanza.

Action resumes tomorrow at 11 a.m. with quarterfinal, as well as wrestle-back second and third rounds.
