FARMVILLE, Va. – Glenn Walters went 2-for-3 with one double, one home run, two runs and six RBI to lead Longwood to a 15-4 win over Campbell in the series opener on Friday evening at Lancer Field.
This is the second consecutive season in which Campbell has dropped the series opener to Longwood. In 2017, the Camels won two straight to overcome the 1-0 deficit and claim the series win for the first time since rejoining the Big South in 2012.
Longwood (19-10, 6-1 Big South) recorded 12 hits in the win, while Campbell (14-18, 4-6 Big South) was limited to six hits in the loss.
Caroline Smith had two hits for the Camels, while
Bri Bryant,
Christa Hall,
Rachel McCollum and
Melissa Tullar each had one.
The Lancers plated six runs in the opening inning to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Kasey Carr was walked to bring home Destiny Martinez. Jessica Smith was walked on the following at-bat to bring home Kaylynn Batten and extend the lead to 2-0. On the next play, Walters smacked a grand slam to center field to bring home four additional runs.
In the second inning, Longwood tacked on two more runs to extend the lead to 9-0. Karleigh Donovan opened up the scoring, hitting a single to left field to score Martinez, who reached base on a single. With two on base, Carr then doubled to right center field to bring home both Donovan and Krista Kelly.
Campbell battled back in the third inning, plating two runs to cut the lead to seven runs at 9-2. Smith knocked a two-run home run to left center field to bring home Bryant, who reached base on a fielder's choice. Smith now has seven home runs on the year, which is the most she has totaled in a single season during her Campbell career.
The Lancers responded in the bottom of the third, scoring one run off of a single to center field by Batten. In the fourth, Longwood tacked on five additional runs off four hits and two walks.
CU added on two runs in the fifth inning of play to cut the deficit to 11 runs at 15-4, but it was not enough as a strikeout ended the game. Bryant got on base via a double down the right field line and scored off a single by McCollum on the following play. With the bases loaded, Tullar smacked a one out double to bring home McCollum.
Sydney Gay (13-6) picked up the victory for Longwood, conceding two hits and two runs across four innings while striking out four. Sydney Mundell pitched the final inning for the Lancers.
Haley Hutchins (3-4) was charged with the loss after giving up eight runs in the opening 1.2 innings.
Lexy Head pitched 2.1 innings in relief, allowing eight hits and seven runs.
