JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four home runs led Campbell to a 7-1 victory over Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex. With the win, the Camels wrapped up the Jacksonville/UNF Tournament with a 2-3 record.
Rachel McCollum hit two long balls, while
Megan Mozingo and
Caroline Smith added one each for the Camels. This is the sixth time thus far this season that the Camels have hit multiple home runs in a game.
The Camels move to 10-11 on the year, while Jacksonville falls to 11-9 on the season. Campbell sits in seventh place in the Big South standings with conference play set to get underway next week.
CU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening inning of play with back-to-back solo home runs by McCollum and Smith. The duo accomplished the same feat in the sixth inning of yesterday's game versus Middle Tennessee State.
Mozingo's two-run shot in the third inning doubled Campbell's lead to four runs at 4-0. The play also scored Smith, who reached base off of a fielder's choice to second base by the Jacksonville defense. This is Mozingo's third career home run and first since CU's 7-3 victory over Gardner-Webb on April 21, 2017.
The Orange and Black tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 6-0.
Katie Manring started things off with a single to right center field and advanced to third base thanks to a double to left field by McCollum. Both Manring and McCollum were brought home off of a double to left center field by Smith.
McCollum hit her second home run of the day in the sixth inning to give the Fighting Camels a 7-0 lead over the Dolphins. With a 1-2 count, the Seven Springs, N.C., native smacked a solo homer to left field, her eighth of the season. This is McCollum's third multi-home run game of the 2018 season.
Jacksonville's Kristen Griffith hit her first home run of the season in the seventh inning to bring the game to the final score of 7-1. The Dolphins threatened to put more runs on the board after a walk and error put two runners on base, but two straight outs ended the late rally.
Megan Richards (7-4) pitched her sixth complete game of the season, giving up four hits and one run to pick up the victory. She fanned out four Jacksonville batters and now has 38 strikeouts on the year.
Haley Holloway (2-2) was charged with the loss after conceding two hits and two runs in 0.1 innings pitched. Alyssa Bilodeau, Seana Mora and Maddie Kaufman all entered the circle in relief for the Dolphins on Sunday.
The Camels will travel to Orangeburg, S.C., to take on South Carolina State in a doubleheader on Tuesday, with first pitch of the opening game slated for 1 p.m. For the latest information on Campbell softball, make sure to follow
