GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jordan Gontram's walk-off homer to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning lifted UNC Greensboro to a 6-5 victory over Campbell Wednesday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
Gontram's second home run of the game – and 10th of the season – provided the winning margin for UNCG (39-9), which ended Campbell's seven-game win streak.
Hannah Stiltner (7-3) tossed 4 1/3 innings of two-hit, shutout relief to earn the victory. Campbell touched UNCG starter Alicia Bazonski for five runs off seven hits in 4 2/3 frames.
Megan Richards (16-10) allowed six runs – five earned – on 12 hits with three walks and two strikeouts over eight innings. Gontram connected on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth for the winner.
Caroline Smith went 3-for-5 with a 3-run homer and two stolen bases for Campbell (25-24).
Rachel McCollum smacked her 18th home run of the season and is just two shy of the school single-season record 20 hit by Courtney Quinn in 2008. Melissa Herring also had a pair of hits for the Camels.
Gotram's solo shot extended UNCG's lead to 3-0 through three innings before Smith hit her 13th round-tripper of the year to tie the score in the top of the fourth. McCollum's solo blast tied the score with two out in the top of the sixth; then Smith singled, stole second, and eventually scored the go-ahead run on an error after
Katie Manring's infield hit.
However, Gabrielle Cubbage delivered a run-scoring double in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at 5-5.
After taking a break for final exams, Campbell closes the regular season next week with three games at NC A&T (May 3), North Carolina (May 4) and Duke (May 6). The Big South Conference Championship begins May 9 at Radford, Va.
