GREENSBORO, N.C. –
Lizabeth McCurry,
Katie Manring and
Rachel McCollum combined to drive in 13 runs and Campbell defeated North Carolina A&T 14-4 in a game shortened to five innings Wednesday at the Lady Aggie Softball Stadium.
McCurry finished 4-of-4 with a double, her 15th home run of the year, and tied her career high with six RBI as the Camels jumped to a 12-2 lead after three innings. Manring tied her season high with four RBI, while McCollum drove in three for Campbell (26-24), which won for the eighth time in the last nine games.
Campbell entered the game ranked 12th in the country in home runs per game and finished with season-highs for doubles (5) and hits (15). McCurry's three-run shot in the third was CU's lone round-tripper of the day, but the Camels smacked seven extra-base hits in only five innings.
Haley Hutchins (7-6) worked four innings, allowing four runs on six hits, to earn the victory. A&T starter Hailee Cutts (0-10) gave up six earned runs on seven hits in one and 1/3 innings and the Aggies (7-37) lost their 11th-straight game.
McCollum was 3-of-4 with her 16th and 17th doubles of the season, while Manring tied her season high with four RBI on a day when she singled, doubled and tripled.
Campbell jumped ahead in the first on McCurry's run-scoring single and a two-run triple by Manring. The lead reached 7-0 in the second after McCollum's RBI double, a two-run double from McCurry and Manring's run-scoring two-bagger.
McCollum's two-run double and McCurry's 3-run blast – her 15th homer of the season – pushed the margin to 12-2 in the third.
Abby Perryman had a leadoff double in the fourth and later scored on Melissa Tuller's RBI grounder. Manring's RBI single closed the scoring in the fifth.
Campbell concludes its regular season with games Friday at North Carolina (7 p.m.) and Sunday at Duke (1:30). The Big South Conference Championship begins next Wednesday (May 9) at Radford, Va.
