RADFORD, VA. –
Katie Manring drove in a season-best five runs to lead No. 4 Campbell past No. 5 Gardner-Webb 12-4 in a Big South Championships elimination game Thursday at Radford Softball Stadium.
Campbell improves to 29-26 overall, while Gardner-Webb's season ends at 29-29.
The Camels won in run-rule walk-off fashion for the second straight day, posting seven runs in the bottom of the sixth for the eight-run lead. With the score at 5-4 CU heading to the bottom of the sixth,
Lizabeth McCurry's two-run single was followed by a three-run home run from Manring, putting the Camels up 10-4.
A double steal, with
Madison Herring scoring the winner after the junior's RBI fielder's choice capped off the win for CU.
Manring was 2-for-3 with the sixth inning homer and a walk, while
Abby Perryman also went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs and a walk. Perryman's third inning, two-run homer breaking a 3-3 knot. McCurry also knocked in a pair, going 1-for-3 with two runs.
The Camels have homed six times in three games (two in each game) in the 2018 Big South Championships.
Megan Mozingo and
Rachel McCollum also picked up two hits and scored twice for the Camels.
Both teams jumped on the board in the first, with Andria Booth sparking a two-run frame with a leadoff triple. Campbell responded with a three-run inning, including a two-run single from Manring.
Andria Booth was 3-for-4 with a run and a triple, while Rachel Cumisky drove in a pair, going 2-for-2 with a run.
Haley Hutchins (9-6) picked up the win, allowing four runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 frames, adding two strikeouts and two walks.
Megan Richards was credited with the save (3), working a perfect 2/3 of an inning.
Ashley Wark (17-17) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits with four walks and a strikeout. Sam Harrell surrendered five runs on four hits in relief, walking five.
