Camels fall to UNC in NCAA Regional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 7 North Carolina claimed the doubles point and the first three singles courts to finish as the Tar Heels defeated Campbell 4-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament Chapel Hill Regional Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

With the loss, Campbell (17-6, 6-1 Big South) ended an eight-match win streak. The Big South Conference Champions picked up one set win as Dustin Werner won the first set at No. 2 6-3 but his court did not finish before the Heels reeled off three singles wins.

North Carolina (24-5, 11-1 ACC) opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Lorenz Schwab and Dustin Werner fell 6-4 at No. 1 while Lukas Schaefer and Louis Monterosso dropped a 6-4 decision at No. 3.

No. 3 nationally ranked William Blumberg picked up the Tar Heels first singles win at No. 1 – 6-0, 6-2 – followed by a 6-1, 6-4 win from Simon Soendergaard at No. 3 before Blaine Boydin clinched the match for the Tar Heels with a 6-4, 6-0 win.

The Camels trip to the NCAA Tournament was the first ever in program history and the 2018 squad's Big South Championship was the first since 1992.

Campbell closes out the season just three wins shy of last year's program best record of 20-5, 5-2 Big South Conference. This year's 6-1 conference record marks the program's best conference mark since the 1993 season when Campbell posted a perfect 7-0 mark in the regular season in Big South play. Before last year's Big South Runner-up bid and the program's best mark in school history, the last time the Camels won at least 17 matches was in the 2011 season in Campbell's last season in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 17-5 overall mark as well as a 7-3 ledger in conference play.
