DURHAM, N.C. –
Caroline Smith doubled with the bases loaded and
Megan Richards tossed a complete game Sunday to lift Campbell to a 3-2 win at Duke in the regular season finale for both teams.
In a game delayed by thunderstorms in the area, Duke left the bases full in the fifth and seventh innings and Campbell (27-25) won its ninth in the last 11 outings.
Smith's bases clearing double provided the Camels with a 3-0 cushion in the third.
Cassie Wancheck led off with a single and moved to second on a throwing error after
Melissa Tullar reached on a fielder's choice. After Hannah Parker moved the runners up on a sacrifice, Melissa Herring reached on an infield hit.
Smith doubled to right to send home Wancheck and Tullar and a fielding error allowed Herring to score all the way from first.
Raine Wilson's RBI double pulled the Blue Devils (29-26) within 3-1 in the bottom of the third.
A three-base error allowed Wilson to advance all the way to third with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Amelia Wiercioch delivered a sacrifice fly to cut the margin to 3-2 with two out. Duke then loaded the bases on a walk and a pair of errors before Hannah Pridemore grounded out to end the game.
Richards (17-11) allowed one earned run on seven hits and five walks while striking out four and stranding a dozen Duke runners in seven innings to earn the win. Wiercioch (11-12) suffered the loss, giving up three runs – two earned – on three hits in three innings.
Wancheck finished the day 2-of-2 at the plate, while Smith was 1-of-3 with her two-run double.
Campbell begins play Wednesday at noon as the fourth seed in the Big South Championship at Radford, Va., against fifth-seeded Gardner-Webb.
