RADFORD, VA. – No. 5 Gardner-Webb plated seven runs in the top of the seventh to down 4
th-seeded Campbell 11-5 in the Big South Championships opener Wednesday at Radford Softball Stadium.
Gardner-Webb moves to 29-27 on the year, while Campbell dips to 27-26 overall.
The Camels led 5-4 heading into the seventh inning after
Lizabeth McCurry's one out, three-run home run in the home half of the fifth.
The Runnin' Bulldogs sent 11 to the plate in the top of the seventh, with the first eight reaching base. Katie Stettler led off the frame with a single and scored on Katie Prebble's RBI double. Lauren Huffman also picked up a two-run base hit, while Madi Lewis' pinch hit, two-run double capped the inning two batters later.
Ashley Wark (17-16) earned the win in relief, pitching two scoreless innings with a strikeout and a walk. Starter Sam Harrell allowed five runs, all earned, on eight hits with four walks and a strikeout over five frames.
Megan Richards (17-12) took the loss for the Camels, surrendering 11 runs, 10 earned, on 14 hits with six strikeouts and five walks in six innings.
Haley Hutchins tossed an inning of relief, fanning one.
Eight different Runnin' Bulldogs drove in runs on the day, with Prebble going 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs. Huffman was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run, while Maddi Johnson was 2-for-2 with two runs, a RBI and two walks.
In addition to her fifth inning homer, her 16
th of the season, McCurry also walked three times.
Caroline Smith went 1-for-4, putting Campbell on the board with a two out, first inning solo homer. The junior also scored twice, while
Melissa Tullar plated a run on her fourth inning double.
Katie Manring and
Abby Perryman also notched two hits apiece for the Camels.
Campbell will face No. 6 Winthrop at 5 p.m. in an elimination game.
