Donald, Genas lead Campbell past Winthrop

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Jessica Donald recorded her first goal of the season and dished out an assist to Alexa Genas as Campbell defeated league leading Winthrop, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Eakes Athletics Complex.

"I'm so proud of our girls. Winthrop is a great team. There is a reason they are getting the great wins that they are and having a great season," said head coach Samar Azem. "We had great energy in the second half. To come back against a good team is a hard thing to do in this conference."

In the 40th minute, Arryana Daniels netted the opening goal off a corner kick from Keeley Leising. Leising played the ball into Daniels' whose header deflected off a Campbell defender and into the back of the net.

Just a minute before her goal, Daniels headed a shot towards goal off a corner kick but Amanda Crecelius recorded a team save by blocking the shot and then dribbling the ball outside the box for the clearance.

After the halftime break, Jessica Donald opened the scoring slate for the Camels. Shannon Wratchford crossed a corner kick into McKenna de Graaf who fired a shot that was blocked into the air. Alexa Genas then headed a shot towards goal but a Winthrop defender kept the ball out of the net for a team save. The save rebounded out to Anna Brantley who headed the ball up to Jessica Donald who finished the attack with a header for her first goal of the season.

Later, in the 81st minute, Donald gathered the ball at midfield and dribbled down to the corner where she cut past a Winthrop defender. The freshman's cross attempt was blocked but she gathered the ball and found Alexa Genas in the box who bent the game winner into the far side of the net for the score.

Campbell was able to fend off many scoring Winthrop scoring opportunities on the day as Erin Scott only had to pick up one save to go alongside Crecelius' team save in the 39th minute.

Campbell was able to place eight shots on target as a part of 16 total shots. Campbell's 16 shots tied a season high as Campbell also fired off 16 shots in its season opener against South Carolina State.

Campbell nearly opened up the scoring tally in the opening period when Cameron Turner dribbled through multiple Eagle defenders into the box where she fired one off forcing the Winthrop keeper to make a diving foot save.

"I'm excited about our next steps as we move to our next game and I'm exciting about growing with this team," closed Azem.

After Saturday's win, Campbell's unbeaten streak has now been pushed to three games. Campbell continues conference play on Wednesday, October 3 as the Camels travel to Charleston Southern for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
