Camels fall to ECU on the road

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jayda Hylton-Pelaia and Kim Sanford both netted their first goals of the season for ECU as the Pirates defeated Campbell 2-0 Thursday night at Johnson Field.

In the 19th minute, Hylton-Pelaia notched her first goal of the season with a shot eom the top of the box to the bottom right corner to put the Pirates on the board first.

Kim Sanford closed the book on the night with a goal on a breakaway where she fired the ball into the lower corner for the score.

"ECU is a very good team, theyre having a great year and do a great job breaking teams down. Overall I am proud of our team. We found our identity in the second half. We applied ourselves and saw success in areas against a good team. I know our girls are feeling confident about that," said head coach Samar Azem

ECU (4-1-2) was able to fire off 27 shots to Campbell's nine and was able to put 14 on frame to Campbell's four. Campbell (1-5) drew five fouls on the Pirates and drew with the Pirates in corners with five each.

"We still have to learn. We defended in our half too much in the first half we gave up two preventable goals but we saw a lot of positive flashes today.  Erin has been consistent. Our younger players are playing with more confidence and awareness. Alexa did great to hit the crossbar and Rosie narrowly missed one off the post, either go in and it's a 1-1 game, things are different," Azem continued.

Melanie Stiles picked up the win in goal after recording four saves on nine shots faced over the full 90 minutes.

Erin Scott continued to rack up big save numbers with a 12 save performance featuring six in each half over 90 minutes of action and 27 shots faced.

Alexa Genas fired off five shots on the night including three on goal for the Camels. In the 58th minute, Genas clanged a shot off the crossbar. Rosie O'Neal and Callie Beckwith both hit the post for the Camels as well after the referee called a foul drawn by Jessica McDonald.

Campbell closes out non-conference play Sunday as the Camels return to Eakes Athletics Complex to take on VMI at 2:00 p.m. You can listen to Zach Berly on the call or follow along through live stats and on twitter.

"I'm excited for this group. We faced adversity early and they never quit.  We have some fantastic potential, we will regroup, get better the next two days and are excited to be back home to face VMI Sunday," Azem closed.
