Camels fall 3-0 to Winthrop in Big South final

ROCK HILL, S.C. Campbell outside hitter Lailah Green paired 12 kills with 13 digs for her second double-double this season, but the third-seeded Fighting Camels suffered a 3-0 loss to top-seeded Winthrop on Sunday afternoon in the title game of the Big South Championship at Winthrop Coliseum.

With the win, Winthrop improved to 24-4 overall, swept the Big South regular-season and tournament titles, and clinched the Big South's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, while Campbell earned its first Big South runner-up finish since 2015, and ended its 2019 campaign at 17-13.

Green, who was named to the Big South All-Tournament Team alongside CU setter Madee Miner, recorded a match-high 13 digs, besting both team's liberoes. Miner dished out 15 assists in the setback, suitable for her 26th match of double-digit assists this season.

Sarah Colla had 10 kills and Ananda Patterson added seven kills, while Emily Mitter dished out a team-high 19 assists. Elyse Gross reached double-digit digs with 11, logging her 25th double-digit dig performance of the year.

Winthrop's Siani Yamaguchi, the Big South Player of the Year and Big South Championship MVP, recorded a match-high 36 assists, and she had 10 digs. The Eagle offense was led by Nikkia Benitez and Morgan Bossler, who had 12 and 10 kills, respectively.

Campbell trailed by four, 15-11, in the first set, but a kill by Patterson sparked 4-0 Camel run, tying the score at 15 apiece. Winthrop and CU traded the next seven points until the Eagles earned two in a row, taking a two-point lead, 20-18, forcing Campbell to take a timeout.

The Camels got back to within one at 21-20 after back-to-back long rallies ended in kills from Green, but Winthrop closed the set on a 4-1 run to take a 1-0 set lead.

Campbell led by as many as six in the second set, including at 13-7, but Winthrop pulled to within one, 14-13, eventually take its first lead of the set at 23-22. A Winthrop service error tied the score at 23-23 before the Eagles got a pair of kills to win the set, 25-23.

Winthrop jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in set three before Campbell earned its first point by way of a kill from Hailey Wilson. The Camels used a late 7-1 run to cut the deficit to one at 23-22; however, kills from Makayla Doyle and Emily Wunder earned Winthrop the 25-24 win, securing the Eagles' first Big South Championship title since 2006.
