Six Camels take Southeast Open titles

ROANOKE, VA. – Campbell took six individual championships and placed 17 overall to kick off the 2019-20 season Sunday at the Southeast Open.

Matthew Dallara at 157 pounds and Michael Ferree at 165 also took individual titles in the Freshman/Sophomore Division of the tournament, the first collegiate tournament championships for the pair of redshirt freshmen.

Gonser was the first to top a podium on the day for the Camels, going 3-0 with a 5-3 win over Missouri's Allan Hart in the finals. The redshirt senior combined for a 15-0 score in his first two bouts of the day, including an 8-0 major decision over Chattanooga's Franco Valdes in the semifinals.

At 141 pounds, Heil registered four straight decisions on the day, edging North Carolina's Zach Sherman 5-4 in the championship round.

Perez tallied three bonus point wins on the way to an unblemished tournament to open the 2019-20 season. The redshirt senior recorded a 22-5 tech fall over Notre Dame College's Dominic Jacocks in his first action, then another tech fall, 16-0, to advance past Missouri's Luke Fortuna.
