Josh Heil took runner-up, highlighting three Campbell placers at the 57th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Sears Centre Arena.
Heil was one of five Camels to advance to day two of the prestigious tournament, with No. 12
Andrew Morgan taking fifth at 184 pounds and No. 10
Noah Gonser placing fifth at 133.
Heil, ranked No. 10 at 141 pounds, advanced to the finals with a 4-2 decision over No. 8 Tristan Moran of Wisconsin, becoming the second Camel to ever reach the Midlands championship round. No. 7 Max Murin claimed the championship with a 5-3 decision, Heil's first tournament loss of the season. The redshirt junior went 5-1 over the two-day tournament.
After going 3-0 on Sunday, Morgan fell to No. 4 Taylor Lujan of Northern Iowa in an 11-3 major decision in the 184 semifinals. Following a 7-4 decision from Iowa's Cash Wilcke in the consolation semis, Morgan defeated No. 13 Noah Stewart of Army West Point for the second straight day, claiming fifth with a 6-4 decision, making his second career appearance on the Midlands podium.
Gonser, also a Midlands finalist in 2018, took a 7-2 decision over Harvard's Michael Jaffe to start day two action for the Camels, going 2-1 on Sunday. The redshirt senior advanced to the consolation semifinals with another 7-2 decision, this time over North Carolina's Joe Heilmann, where he narrowly fell 6-3 to No. 3 Sebastian Rivera of Northwestern. Gonser placed fifth, edging No. 21 Louie Hayes of Virginia, 3-2.
Heavyweight
Jere Heino and
Quentin Perez at 165 pounds also advanced to day two of the tournament.
Campbell finished 14
th in the team standings with 41.5 points, while No. 1 Iowa claimed the championship with 196.5 points, as five Hawkeyes earned individual titles.
The Camels will begin 2020 at the David H. Lehman Franklin & Marshall Open on January 4.
