Camels drop pair at Gamecock Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. ­- Campbell plated nine total runs but dropped its pair of matchups on its first day at the Gamecock Invitational. Campbell.
 
Campbell (1-7) dropped its opening match up to No. 14 South Carolina before coming up short against St. John's 4-3 in the night cap.

Cayla Drotar picked up the win in the circle and helped her own cause by driving in eight runs.
 
Drotar (3-for-3, 2 runs, 8 RBI) belted two home runs including a three run shot in the second innings followed by a grand slam as a part of a nine fun third inning to lift South Carolina (6-2) to victory.
 
Drotar tossed 4.2 innings and picked up the win by allowing just one earned run across three hits while striking out two.
 
Campbell struck first with a RBI double from Kynadi Tipler in the first but the Gamecocks responded with two of their own including a RBI double from Drotar in the bottom half. South Carolina tacked on five more in the second before their offensive explosion in the third.
 
Campbell plated six in the final frame which featured two runs via walks. With the bases loaded, Bri Bryant and Abby Perryman recorded RBI on back-to-back walks which plated runs. Cassie Wancheck ensued with a grand slam to drive in four more.
 
Haley Hutchins rendered the loss after going just 2.2 innings where she allowed nine runs – seven earned – on seven hits.
 
Campbell vs St. John's
 
Megan Mozingo launched a three-run home run in fourth to draw the Camels to within one but Campbell could not complete the comeback.
 
Mozingo (1-for-3, 3 RBI, 1 run) sent a three-run shot over to right field wall to bring home Kynadi Tipler and Kayla Fredendall.
 
Kayla Fredendall singled to right field to start the inning for the Camels. Following a strikeout, Tipler walked to place runners on first and second. Mozingo followed with her homer to pull the Camels to within one.
 
Madison Morris (3-1) picked up the win after giving up three runs across five hits over seven complete innings.
 
Megan Richards (1-2) was dealt the loss with four earned runs among 10 hits over six complete.

Campbell returns to action tomorrow starting at 10:00 am against Ohio followed by a matchup with Charlotte at 5:30 pm.
