BUIES CREEK, N.C. – About 40 hours after walking off the floor of Gore Arena following a 61-48 win over High Point, Campbell will face league rival Longwood on the road Saturday in a 3 p.m. start.
In front of the largest regular crowd to fill Gore Arena in five years and an ESPNU national TV audience, the Camels (16-11, 9-4) forced 16 High Point turnovers and pulled away from the Panthers in the second half.
Chris Clemons scored 27 points, while
Andrew Eudy added 16, plus a career-high 15 rebounds for the Camels, who committed only four turnovers all night.
The Camels, who moved into second place in the Big South standings, have won five of their last seven games and are off to their best start in conference play since '11-12. CU's four league losses have come by a total of 16 points.
Longwood's two-game win streak ended Thursday with an 86-66 loss at Hampton. The Lancers trailed by just two at the break (44-42), but shot only 26 percent (6-23) in the final half. Jaylon Wilson led Longwood with a career-high 27 points, while Juan Munoz (13) and Shabooty Phillips (10) also reached double figures.
On Feb. 2 at Buies Creek, the Camels led built a 39-20 lead over Longwood at the break and went on to an 83-62 win. Clemons scored 39 points (10-18 threes) and
Cory Gensler 14 for the Camels, who made 17-33 triples. Phillips and Munoz led the Lancers with 14 each.
- Campbell stands 3-7 on the road this year, 3-3 at Big South Conference foes. Longwood is 9-4 at home, 3-4 vs. Big South opponents at Willett Hall.
- The nation's leading scorer (29.7), Chris Clemons now stands 8th on the NCAA Division I all-time scoring list with 3,033 points in 124 career outings. He has extended his double-figure scoring streak to 109 games, the longest among all active players and 3rd-best in D1 history. Clemons enters Saturday's game only 26 points away from moving past Keydren Clark of Saint Peter's (3058 from 2002-06) into 7th place on the all-time scoring list.
- Longwood is just 2 wins shy of matching the program's Division I record for victories in a season (17), which the Lancers reached in 2008-09 as a D1 independent.
- The Camels are searching for their first two-game regular season sweep of the Lancers since Longwood joined the Big South in 2012-13.
- Overall, Longwood leads all Big South schools in field goal percentage defense (.407). Through 14 league games, Big South opponents are shooting a combined 43.1% vs. the Lancers, the 2nd-best mark in the conference
- Longwood junior transfer guard Lorenzo "Shabooty" Phillips leads the Big South in free throw shooting (.883) and is 16th in scoring (13.8). Senior Isaiah Walton was averaging a team-best 17.8 points per game, but was dismissed from the team on Jan. 31.
- The late Jerome Kersey, a 17-year (1984-2001) NBA veteran, was a two-time Division II All-American at Longwood from 1980-84. He made two trips to the NBA finals with the Portland Trail Blazers (1990, 1992) and won an NBA title as a member of the 1999 San Antonio Spurs.
- Following Saturday's game, the Camels travel to USC Upstate Wednesday (Feb. 27) before hosting Radford Mar. 2 in the regular season finale.
