Camels split games on day two of Cowgirl Classic

LAKE CHARLES, LA - Campbell split its pair of games on day two of the Cowgirl Classic topping Samford 5-0 and dropping the nightcap to McNeese State 7-2.

Campbell vs Samford

Megan Richards tossed a three-hit shutout over all seven innings as Campbell topped Samford 5-0 for head coach Sharonda McDonald's first win as a head coach.

Cassie Wancheck drove in three runs and Megan Mozingo added the other two runs driven in.

Campbell pounced for two runs in the second which started with a one out single to the short stop by Abby Perryman (1-3, 2 runs). Megan Mozingo (2-3, 2 RBI, 1 run) brought in Perryman with a triple down the right field line. Mozingo closed out the play by advancing home on the wild throw from the right fielder.

Campbell tacked on three more in the sixth when Cassie Wancheck sky rocketed a fly ball to left center that fell between the fielders to clear the bases and extend the Campbell lead to 5-0 after she advanced to second.

Richards (1-1) picked up the win by scattering three hits over 7.0 innings. The senior fanned four batters and allowed just one walk over 73 pitches.

Richards dealt four one-two-three innings over the course of the game. She avoided an early scoring opportunity for Samford (1-3) when Madison Couch roped a triple to right center to lead off the inning. Richards then forced a ground out to third followed by Avery Wheatley gunning down the runner at home on a grounder hit her way before a final groundout to short ended the inning.

Annalyn Yantis was dealt the loss after allowing two earned runs – five total – over six innings of work. Yantis hurled 74 pitches which featured six Campbell hits, two walks and five punch outs.

Campbell vs McNeese

Cory McCrary went two-for-three with three RBI and two runs of her own and Justyce McClain registered two hits and scored twice as McNeese defeated Campbell 7-2.

Avery Wheatley and Christa Hall both went two-for-three on the night for Campbell (1-3). Wheatley crossed the plate once while Hall drove a run in.

McNeese opened with a pair of runs off of back-to-back doubles from McClain and McCrary to jump to a 2-0 lead before adding another in the second and an additional in the third.

Trailing 4-0 in the top of the fifth, Morgan Rios sent a fly ball to center field which converted into one run with the bases loaded on a sacrifice fly that drove in Perryman who doubled to center field to open the inning. Camels stranded three runner afterwards however.

Following the missed opportunity, McNeese added one more in the bottom half before solidifying two more in the sixth.

Avery Wheatley beat out a single to third to start the Campbell half of the seventh before Christa Hall doubled to left center to score Wheatley from first.

Amber Coons tallied the win by allowing just four hits and one run (earned) over five innings of work to go along with five strike outs. Saleen Flores came in to secure the save over two innings of work where she surrendered just one run on two hits with three punch outs.

Lexy Head rendered the loss giving up four runs, all earned, on six hits through two and a third innings of work.

Campbell closes out action at the Cowgirl Classic tomorrow against No. 14 Arkansas at 10:00 am (EST).
