Camels secure share of regular season title

CU wins 7th-straight match

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell secured at least a share of the Big South Conference men's tennis regular season title Wednesday after defeating Radford 5-2 at the Nisbet Center.

The Fighting Camels (14-4, 7-1) won their seventh-straight and 13th in the last 14 outings to clinch an unbeaten (9-0) record at home.

Gardner-Webb (10-7, 5-1), which dealt the Camels their only loss of the season last month at Boiling Springs, has matches remaining Thursday at Hampton and Saturday at home against Longwood.  If the Runnin' Bulldogs win both, they would share the regular season title with the Camels and earn the top seed in next week's Big South Championship at Radford, Va.

"Two of our goals were to go undefeated at home and win the regular season," said Campbell head coach David Johnson. "We're checking off some of those boxes, which is a good thing. After knocking on the door for several years, now we're going to find out what's harder – to win the championship or repeat. Certainly this run has been impressive for our seniors.  Now it's time to get ready for next week."

Campbell secured the doubles point thanks to a seventh-straight win from the team of Bastien Huon and Ondrej Labik.  The Camel tandem won 6-0 at the third position.  Dustin Werner and Raphael Calzi ran their win streak at No.-1 doubles to five matches and improved to 12-4 in duals with a 6-4 victory.

Labik scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the fifth singles position and Werner won in straight sets at No.-1.  Huon then finished a 6-4, 6-2 decision at the second spot to secure the dual match victory.  Gerard Sola also won in straights at the fourth place.

Wednesday's contest marked the final home appearance for Campbell's senior class of Werner, Sola, Louis Monterosso and Fabien Ayet.  That group has helped the Camels reach the last two Big South tournament finals, including a win in the 2018 championship.

Heading into Thursday's regular season finale at East Carolina, Campbell owns a 59-28 record in dual matches over the last four seasons.
