ASHEVILLE - Campbell swimming earned a tie in its season opener, 131-131, against UNC Asheville at the Justice Center Pool on Saturday afternoon.
The Camels, down 125-120 after 13 of 14 events, tied the dual-meet behind a thrilling victory in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Annie Sanchez, Neringa Cerniauskaite, Meredith Ashburn and Colleen Renshaw earned the relay win, finishing in 3:32.15 to tie the meet.
Campbell began the day with two placings in the 200 medley relay as Julia Sherlock, Isabella Gaskey, Simone Palomo and Renshaw took second (1:49.85) while Maialen Sudupe, Piper Burton, Skyler DeWall and Cerniauskaite took third (1:50.71).
Sanchez picked up the first event win of the day for the Camels in the 200 yard freestyle, taking top honors with a time of 1:55.81. Erica Losey placed third in the same event with a time of 1:59.64.
Julia Sherlock earned another win for the Camels, placing first in the 100 back (59.96) followed closely behind by freshman Maialen Sudupe (1:00.32).
The Camels picked up a third event win as Lauren Shoemaker narrowly took the win in the 200 fly, clocking in at 2:11.25. María Kristjánsdóttir earned another event win for Campbell in the 200 yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:27.77.
Cincinnati transfer Simone Palomo picked up the fifth and final individual event win on the day in the 100 fly in 57.66.
Maggie Whitman (11:04.49) and Avery Rogers (11:12.80) took second and third respectively in the 1000 yard freestyle while Burton (1:10.00), Gaskey (1:10.23), and Kellie Knotts (1:10.85) all earned points in the 100 breaststroke.
