LYNCHBURG, Va. - Campbell swimming maintained its lead as the second day of the TYR '85 Invitational came to a close Saturday evening at the Liberty Natatorium.
Campbell now leads the competition with 1923 points, ahead of UNC Asheville with 1689 points and Liberty with 1353. The Camels picked up another two relay event wins and added two more first-place finishes in individual events to build onto its lead heading into the final day of competition on Sunday.Â
The Camels began the evening with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay as the 'A' team of Julia Sherlock, Isabella Gaskey, Simone Palomo and Colleen Renshaw finished first (1:44.56) followed by the 'B' team of Maialen Sudupe, Piper Burton, Skyler DeWall and Annie Sanchez in second (1:45.45).
Palomo earned her first individual event win of the evening in the 100 fly, finishing in 55.60. DeWall also medaled, clocking in at 56.72 to earn third.
Freshman standout María Kristjánsdóttir took second (4:32.43) in the 400 IM as Liz Sparacino (4:34.76) and Maggie Whitman (4:36.19) took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the event.Â
Campbell picked up another event win as Sanchez placed first (1:51.35) in the 200 free while Palomo took third (1:53.97).Â
Gaskey finished third in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.45) while Sudupe took second (57.26) and Sherlock third (57.47) in the 100 back.Â
CU rounded out the evening picking up its fourth relay victory of the weekend in the 800 free relay. The A-team of Sanchez, Erica Losey, Neringa Cerniauskaite, and Renshaw took first in 7:34.31. The B-team of Avery Rogers, Lauren Shoemaker, Ema Balciute and Meredith Ashburn also took third in the event in 7:48.18.
The Fighting Camels return tomorrow for the final day of the TYR '85 Invitational with the finals of the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breaststroke, 200 fly and 400 free relay events remaining at 5 p.m.Â
