JUCO All-American to join team in January; will play next fall

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Dakari Johnson, a 6-foot guard from Raeford, N.C., has signed an athletics grant-in-aid with Campbell University, head men's basketball coach Kevin McGeehan announced Tuesday.

A 2019 graduate of Hoke County High School, Johnson played his freshman season at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington.  He will join the team for the 2021 spring semester and become eligible to play next fall.

In the 2019-20 campaign, Johnson earned third-team NJCAA All-America honors after leading Region X in scoring with a 24.1 average.  He grabbed 5.1 rebounds, while averaging 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals per outing.  Johnson shot 47 percent from the floor, 42 percent from 3-point range and 77 percent from the line for the Sea Devils. He was named first-team all-region, Region X freshman of the year and Cape Fear CC freshman of the year.

"We are excited to add Dakari to our program and believe he is going to be a very good player for us," said McGeehan.  "It's going to be a great benefit for Dakari to learn our system in the spring semester and hit the ground running when he becomes eligible next fall."

As a senior at Hoke County High School, Johnson averaged 20 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists.  He was named Sandhills Conference and District 4 MVP, Hoke County offensive player of the year and was named all-league for coach Quame Patterson.

During his junior season, he helped lead Village Christian Academy to a state championship while averaging 18 points and five assists under coach Kurtis Darden.

Johnson is the second recruit in the 2021 Campbell signing class, in addition to guard Broc Bidwell, who inked his NLI last month.  The duo will join a Fighting Camel program that compiled three-straight postseason appearances from 2017-19, won the 2019 Big South Conference regular season championship and averaged 18 wins over the last four years.

Off to its best start in nine years (4-0), Campbell returns to action Wednesday in a 3:00 p.m. tip-off at Elon.
