BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- For the second time in as many matches the result came down to court No. 6 where East Carolina claimed the 4-3 win to break up Campbell's three-match win streak.
Ho Chiao Hsia clinched the match for East Carolina (3-2) at No. 6 with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win over
Essence Martins.
The Pirates opened the match by claiming the doubles points with a pair of wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Michelle Ncube and Hsia paired to win the opener 6-3 before Hanna Axelsson and Minette Van Vreden clinched the doubles point 6-4 at No. 3.
ECU then went up 2-0 after a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1 for Lisa Hofbauer to end a three-match win streak for
Ana Castillo.
Lea Cutura then put the Camels on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 to improve her record to 4-3 on the season.
After ECU went up 3-1 with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win for Hanna Axelsson at No. 5,
Lou Regen and
Lucile Pons won two straight to tie the match 3-3.Â
Regen secured her matchup at No. 3 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 before Pons set up the clincher with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 4. Regen's win pushed her overall singles record to 3-1 on the year while Pons picked up her first singles win.
Campbell returns to action next Thursday at home against UNC Wilmington with first serve set for 1:00 p.m.
