BUIES CREEK - Megan Richards struck out a career-best 12 batters as Campbell fell to Gardner-Webb, 1-0. The game was completed this afternoon at the start of the bottom of the sixth, following a postponement due to lightning and rain from yesterday.
Campbell drops to 10-15 on the season while Gardner-Webb improves to 24-5
Richards broke her previous single-game strikeout total of nine (set at San Diego on Feb. 8, 2018) in the fifth inning. Richards continued to improve her career-best to 12, striking out two batters in the top of the seventh inning. Her new career-high of 12 strikeouts is now tied for the second-most in Campbell single-game history and marks the second time this season a Campbell pitcher has struck out 12 batters in a single-game, joining freshman Georgeanna Barefoot.
Destini England also broke a record, collecting her 200th career-hit on a slapper hit to right field in the third inning. England is now one of eight active player to reach the 200 hit milestone.Â
Gardner-Webb scored the only run in the sixth inning on a RBI-single hit up the middle of the field by Autumn Owen.
Campbell threatened in the fourth as Kayla Fredendall leadoff with a double to right center. A groundout advanced her to third, but she was left stranded as Gardner-Webb picked up a strikeout and fly-out to end the inning.Â
The Camels attempted to get a run across in the following inning as Katelyn Chisholm reached on a fielder's choice. England batted next, reaching on an infield hit as both runners took an extra base following a mental error on the Runnin' Bulldogs defense. Gardner-Webb managed to get out of the jam, forcing a fly-out to send it to the sixth.
Weslyn Almond joined Owen in collecting two hits on the day for Gardner-Webb. England went 2-for-3 in the game for the Camels while Fredendall added another hit and walk.
Brooke Perry (11-3) picked up the win for Gardner-Webb, throwing seven innings with eight strikeouts. Richards took the loss despite striking out 12 in a complete game effort.
