BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell University's cheerleading team is one of six nationally to earn the NCA College Go Be Great award for community service and servant leadership. Under the direction of head coach
Stephanie Fox, the Campbell cheer team has been involved in a number of activities throughout the area.
Â
The Go Be Great recognition was one way that the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) chose to honor college cheer athletes around the U.S in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic. April 8th would have been Campbell's first day of competition in Daytona Beach, Fla., at NCA College Nationals before the event was canceled due to COVID-19.Â
Â
The award focuses primarily on the volunteer efforts made by cheer teams across the nation and how they interact with the public and community as a whole. Campbell cheerleaders were involved in numerous service activities during the 2019-20 academic year including:
Â
- Reading to students at local elementary schools.
- Volunteer coaching the Harnett Hawks – a special needs – cheer team.
- Taking part in the Campbell MLK Day of Service to end world hunger, packing over 10,000 meals with the other Campbell athletic teams.
- Taking part in the Santa's Workshop on campus.
- Making the Camels Care videos - including a workout video with multiplication and reading a book and reviewing character, setting, and main idea. The CU cheerleaders used this approach as a way to connect to students in the community during their virtual learning and let them know we are all in this together.
Â
"One major role of a cheer program is to be an ambassador for the university along with representing the school through athletics," said Fox. "We work hard physically to perform and be prepared at games, but many other lessons are learned outside of practice and performance. It is important that our student-athletes understand their impact within the community. Our cheer athletes will tell you that it makes a difference in their lives to see the younger kids look to them as role models and with Campbell Cheerleading we take that seriously. I feel all of our athletes lead with purpose and go above and beyond in service. I am thankful that the National Cheerleaders Association recognized our team's outstanding efforts of service."
