Road stretch continues this week at Longwood

Camels face Lancers Saturday and Sunday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell (5-6, 1-3) heads to Longwood (2-10, 1-5) this weekend for CU's 5th- and 6th-straight road games to open the Big South Conference season.  Saturday's 6:00 p.m. game will air on ESPN3, while Sunday's 6:00 p.m. start will be carried on ESPN+.

The Camels were originally scheduled to host High Point this past Monday-Tuesday, but the Panthers instituted a COVID-19 related pause forcing the postponement of the two-game series.  Instead, the Camels traveled to Gardner-Webb for a pair of games.

Messiah Thompson hit career-highs on consecutive days as the Camels split two outings with the Runnin' Bulldogs.

On Monday, Thompson knocked down 5-of-8 threes and led four Camels in double figures with 15 points in a 70-61 victory.  CU matched its season-low with just 8 turnovers and knocked down 10-of-22 threes.

Thompson's 18-point (4-7 threes) effort and Jesús Carralero's first career double-double (13-10) weren't enough to complete a second-half comeback Tuesday in an 85-70 loss.

Longwood has lost seven of its last eight games, but three of those decisions have come by two, or fewer, points.  Heru Bligen came off the bench to top five Lancers in double figures Monday, but Longwood could not hold an 8-point lead in the second half of a 71-69 loss at USC Upstate.

On Tuesday, DeShaun Wade scored 13 points in Longwood's 65-59 setback at Spartanburg.

CAMPBELL vs. LONGWOOD NOTES
  • Campbell's Cedric Henderson, Jr. (14.2) and Jordan Whitfield (13.8) rank 6th and 7th, respectively, among Big South scoring leaders.
  • Longwood is 2-3 at 1,900-seat Willett Hall this season, 1-1 at home vs. Big South opponents. LWU split a two-game series Dec. 30-31 vs. UNC Asheville.  The Lancers fell 80-73 in the opener, before claiming a 65-55 decision on New Year's Eve.  Campbell stands 2-5 in true road games (1-3 at Big South foes), 4-5 overall away from home.
  • Through 11 games, Campbell leads the Big South Conference and ranks 17th nationally in field goal percentage (.505).  CU stands 2nd in the league in scoring offense (75.5) and leads the league in turnover margin (+3.4).
  • CU has won the turnover margin in 8 of its first 11 games and matched TOs at NC State (12/19).
  • Campbell has won four of the last five games in the series with Longwood, which joined the Big South in 2012-13.
  • CU is 4-7 all-time at Willett Hall after last year's 57-56 loss in a game that included nine lead changes - in Farmville.
  • The Camels have won 4-straight against Longwood at Gore Arena, but do not host the Lancers in the '20-21 campaign.
  • Since joining the Big South in 2012-13, Longwood has compiled a 38-106 record in league regular season play, 1-5 this year.
  • Freshmen have combined to start 21 games this year for the Lancers, most among any Big South team.  Freshman forward Jesper Granlund has started all 12 games.  Frosh guard Justin Hill is 3rd on the team in scoring (10.3) and rates 8th in the league in assists (3.8).
  • The late Jerome Kersey, a 17-year (1984-2001) NBA veteran, was a two-time Division II All-American at Longwood from 1980-84.  He made two trips to the NBA finals with the Portland Trail Blazers (1990, 1992) and won an NBA title as a member of the 1999 San Antonio Spurs.
  • Following this weekend's games at Longwood, the Camels are scheduled to host Presbyterian Jan. 14-15.
