BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Mae McGlynn posted a game-high five points to help visiting Elon pull away from Campbell 13-9 to open the 2021 season Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Campbell (0-1) pulled within a single score at 8-7 with 22:04 remaining after three straight goals, but Elon (1-0) responded with four consecutive goals over the next nine minutes. The Phoenix held CU to two goals in the final 22 minutes of action to take the 13-9 win.
McGlynn tallied two goals and an assist in the opening half, helping Elon lead 5-3 at the half, wrapping a 5-1 run around the break. McGlynn tacked on three ground balls and two caused turnovers on the afternoon.
Freshman
Sam Bischoff paced Campbell on the offensive end with three goals in her collegiate debut, while
Megan Matthews also registered three points on two goals and an assist.
Julianna Sanchez scored twice, adding nine draw controls, and Rasa Welch notched a goal and an assist.
Annie Ryan caused two turnovers with a ground ball for the CU defense, while
Alex Salim saved nine shots with four ground balls.
Margaret Stephan added five points off the bench for Elon on four goals and an assist. Meredith Curtin also picked up three ground balls with two caused turnovers, scoring two goals, while Kailee Follette totaled four ground balls with three caused turnovers.
Campbell controlled the draw 15-8 and converted 5-of-8 free position shots, but turned the ball over 22 times compared to 11 for the Phoenix. Elon also held the edge in ground balls (22-11) and shots (29-17).
The Camels, who host four of its first five contests at Barker-Lane Stadium, return to Buies Creek on February 20, hosting Stetson.
