After 440 days between matches, there wasn't much rust for the Camels who opened their 2021 spring campaign with a straight-sets win over USC Upstate. Campbell closed the second and third sets strong, scoring the final five points of each to earn the wins.
Â
Campbell's only two freshman each found themselves in the starting lineup, with
Chloe Cook starting at outside hitter and
Claranne Fechter at libero.
Â
Campbell got out to a hot start, going up 10-1 and forcing a Spartan timeout. They held that lead the rest of the way through the set and went on to take it 25-12. Freshman outside hitter
Chloe Cook began her collegiate career in a big way, with four kills in her first set.
Â
USC Upstate found its stride in set two and jumped out to a quick lead. The Camels didn't take their first lead until 11-10 in the set. It was back and forth until 20-20 when Campbell turned it on. Two kills by
Lailah Green, two by
Melody Paige and a Spartan error helped the Camels close the set on a 5-0 run and take it 25-20.
Â
The story was similar in the third set, with it being close the whole way. Trailing 23-20 on the verge of USC Upstate forcing a fourth set, Campbell dug in and again scored the final five points of the set. A pair of aces from Cook and sophomore
Elyse Gross helped fuel the run to close it out.
Â
The Campbell defense was rock solid on the night, holding the Spartans to hitting -.012. Campbell had not kept an opponent to hitting below zero since Coppin State on Sept. 15, 2017.
Â
Green paced the Camels with 15 kills while Cook also reached double digits with 10. Green notched a double double adding 10 digs to her stat line as well. Fechter led the defense with 12 digs on the evening.
The dual setters picked up where they left off a season ago, with
Emily Mitter posting 18 sets to
Madee Miner's 17. Â
Â
Campbell is back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. for round two against USC Upstate. That match will again be available on ESPN+.
