HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point Panthers (13-0) topped Campbell (9-4) in four sets Thursday night to clinch first place in the Big South. With the win, High Point earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Lailah Green had a big night and tallied her fifth double-double of the year with 15 kills and 13 digs. The front line posted a season-high 11 total blocks to hold High Point to its lowest hitting percentage of the season at .182. Campbell posted 90 total digs on the night, the most in a match this season.
Claranne Fechter notched a new season-high with 26 digs.
Campbell got out to a fast start in the first set, recording an ace, kill and block to go up 3-0.
Lailah Green then added three consecutive kills to help the Camels take an early 7-3 lead. That was the Camels largest lead and the set remained within three points either way all the way to being tied at 19-19. High Point closed the set on a 6-1 run to take it 25-20.
The Camels bounced back in the second set with a 25-20 win of their own. Campbell got out to a 15-10 lead and never relinquished it with High Point unable to draw any closer than three.
Lailah Green had a big set with six kills to pace the Campbell attack. Miner had already posted a double-double by the end of the second with 10 assists and 11 digs, her sixth of the year. She went on to finish with 16 assists and 15 digs.
High Point threatened to run away with the third set opening up a 15-7 lead, but Campbell refused to go quietly. The Camels strung together an 14-6 run to come all the way back and tie the set at 21 all. Despite the comeback, they couldn't quite get over the hump to take the lead and the Panthers held on for the 25-22 set win.
One set away from the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, High Point did not waste any time locking that up. The Panthers again led by as many as eight at 23-15 before going on to win the final set 25-20.
Madison Smith paced the High Point attack with 15 kills while Abby Bottomley posted a match-high 30 digs.
