BUIES CREEK, NC – Despite a season-high 17 kills from
Lailah Green, Campbell fell in four sets to Charleston Southern Friday afternoon in Gore Arena. Campbell has now split back-to-back weekends and fall to 6-2 at the halfway point of the schedule.
After a quiet night Thursday, the Buccaneers were much more efficient on offense during the rematch, hitting .262 on the day.
Campbell dropped the first set for just the second time this year. Trailing 15-12, Charleston Southern put together a 6-0 run to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The run went to 13-3 in favor of the Bucs to close out the set 25-18, Campbells largest margin of defeat in a set this year.
The Camels bounced back in the second to knot the match at 1-1. After going 2-0 to start the set, Campbell never trailed or even let CSU tie the set. The Bucs got as close as one point at 14-13, but Campbell closed the set strong to go on to win it 25-17.
Chloe Cook was big down the stretch, recording two kills and an ace in the final four Camel points to win it.
The Buccaneers took an extremely close third set where neither team held more than a three-point lead. The Camels largest lead was just two at 13-11. They also led at 20-19 after a
Kate Menz kill. But CSU's offense got hot and notched six kills in their final seven points to take the set 25-22.
Campbell dropped the fourth set 25-23. The Camels nearly forced a few extra points thanks to kills from Green and
Ananda Patterson, pushing it to 24-23, but couldn't quite draw even and CSU closed it out in four sets.
Green's 17 kills came on a match-high 43 attacks as she finished hitting .186.
Claranne Fechter paced the Camel defense with 16 digs, while
Melody Paige posted five blocks and Menz added four.
Madee Miner dished out a season-high 27 assists on the day.
Campbell is back on the road next week, traveling to Gardner-Webb for matches Thursday and Friday. More information on how to follow those matches will be available closer to time.
