BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After posting his first career top-10 finish,
Claude Churchward of Campbell University was named Big South Conference men's golfer of the week.
A senior from Calignac, France, Churchward (75-76-70—221) finished tied for eighth place at the Daniel Island Intercollegiate and led Campbell to a third-place finish in the team standings. He made four birdies and two bogeys in Tuesday's final round on the par-72, 7446-yard Rees Jones design and finished the event ranked first in par-5 scoring (-5) and made nine birdies (T11) and 34 pars.
Campbell posted its best finish of the fall season. The Camels finished in front of South Carolina in addition to Big South members Charleston Southern and USC Upstate. No. 23 Mississippi State (296-294-289—879) won team honors by three shots over runner-up Florida Gulf Coast (295-292-295—882).
CU, which matched MSU for the low team score on Tuesday, was third (305-297-289—891), one stroke better than South Carolina (304-290-298—892) and Memphis (307-293-292—892) in the 18-team event.
Campbell returns to action Jan. 30-31 with the Sea Best Invitational at TPC Sawgrass Dye's Valley in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
