BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State fended off a late rally, giving Campbell its first Southern Conference dual defeat since the 2018-19 season, 19-13 on Sunday at Varsity Gym.
The Mountaineers (7-2, 5-0 SoCon) built a 16-3 lead, taking five of the day's first six matches. Campbell (11-5, 6-1 SoCon), winners of the previous three SoCon regular season and tournament championships, saw its first conference defeat since February 10, 2019, ending a 22 match streak. The stretch stands as the SoCon's second longest winning streak in history, only short of Chattanooga's 27 wins from 2012-16.
Six of the 10 bouts in the tightly contested dual were decided by two or fewer points, including the final deciding matchup at 125 pounds.
Campbell trailed 16-13 after a 15-5 major decision for No. 25
Taye Ghadiali at heavyweight, and needed bonus points in the 10
th and final match between No. 23
Korbin Meink from CU and No. 24 Caleb Smith from App State to secure the come from behind victory. The bout was tied at 1-1, however, at the end of regulation, with Smith getting the overtime takedown to take the match, 3-1, and give the Mountaineers a 19-13 win.
Following No. 28
Shannon Hanna's 4-2 extra time win for Campbell at 141 pounds, App State claimed four straight weight classes, including one point victories at 149 pounds, which featured a top-10 matchup, as well as 174 pounds. No. 31 Cody Bond also picked up a 14-5 major decision at 157 pounds for the Mountaineers.

Caleb Hopkins ended the App State run with a 5-4 decision at 184 pounds, with a 3-1 overtime win for
Chris Kober at 197 pounds in addition to Ghadiali's major decision setting up the deciding 10
th bout.
Through the end of the regular season, four Camels, Hanna (6-0), Hopkins (6-0), Kober (3-0) and Ghadiali (5-0), are all undefeated in SoCon dual matches.
Next up for the Camels will be a return trip to Boone for the
SoCon Championships on March 5. The NCAA Championships will be held March 17-19 in Detroit, Mich.
