BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell closed out its 2021-22 home slate with a 27-12 Southern Conference win over Davidson on Sunday at the Pope Convocation Center / Gore Arena.
Campbell moved to 11-4 overall and 6-0 in SoCon matches, while Davidson dropped to 3-9 and 1-4 in league duals. The Camels extended their SoCon dual win streak to 22 matches dating back to the 2018-19 season, the second longest stretch in the conference's history.
CU jumped out to a 9-3 lead after a first period tech fall from
Zurich Storm at 125 pounds and an 11-3 major decision for
Gabriel Hixenbaugh at 141.
After Davidson took two of the next three bouts with decisions for Gavin Damasco at 149 and Jaden Hardrick at 165, the Camels claimed three straight weight classes, including pins for No. 26
Caleb Hopkins (3:30) at 184 and
Levi Hopkins (5:17) to go along with a 5-0 decision for No. 17
Austin Murphy at 174.
At 197 pounds,
Levi Hopkins trailed 4-2 entering the third period, but starting in the top position, tilted Finlay Holsten and locked in a cradle for the pin, putting the match out of reach for the Wildcats and giving Campbell its seventh straight dual win in the series against Davidson.
Mitchell Trigg closed the match with a 6-0 decision for Davidson.
JoJo Aragona also made his CU debut, topping Davidson's Bryce Sanderlin 13-8.
Next up on the schedule is the first of two trips to Boone, N.C., squaring off against Appalachian State on February 13 in CU's regular season finale. The
SoCon Championships will also return to App State on March 5.
