Camels conclude competition at NCAA Championships

DETROIT, MICH. – Campbell closed out competition at the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Friday. After advancing to day two's action, Campbell's three remaining wrestlers, No. 7 Josh Heil at 149 pounds, No. 24 Caleb Hopkins at 184 and No. 15 Taye Ghadiali at heavyweight were each eliminated.

2022 marked the fourth straight season that Campbell has sent at least six qualifiers to the NCAA Championships.

Heil's illustrious Campbell career, which featured a record five NCAA Championships appearances, an All-American season in 2020, three Southern Conference titles and more than 100 career wins, came to an end on Friday with a loss to Army West Point 24-seed PJ Ogunsanya.

Heil led 3-2 before a takedown from Ogunsanya late at the end of the second period. Ogunsanya Added a takedown late in the third, pinning Heil with four seconds to go in regulation. Heil opened the 2022 NCAA Championships with an 8-0 major decision over Missouri's Josh Edmond.

Hopkins was also eliminated from the bracket in Friday's first session, falling to No. 10 Taylor Venz of Nebraska in a 10-0 major decision. The second time NCAA qualifier went 1-2 in Detroit, including a first period fall (1:42) over Virginia's Michael Battista, seeded No. 25.

Tied up 4-4 in the third period, Missouri's Zach Elam, seeded 16th at heavyweight, took down Ghadiali, eventually pinning the CU redshirt sophomore at the 5:58 mark. Ghadiali ends his 2022 NCAA run at 1-2, including a 10-8 overtime win over Hofstra's Zachary Knighton-Ward, seeded 31st.

Also qualifying for the championships from CU were No. 28 seed Korbin Meink at 125 pounds, No. 33 Domenic Zaccone at 133 and No. 22 Shannon Hanna at 141, finishing competition on Thursday.

The NCAA Championships continue tonight from Little Caesars Arena.
