Three Camels advance to day two at NCAA Championships

DETROIT, MICH. – Josh Heil at 149 pounds, Caleb Hopkins at 184 and Taye Ghadiali at heavyweight all secured Thursday wins and advanced to day two action at the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships at Little Caesars Arena.

Seeded No. 7 at 149 pounds, Heil, making his fifth NCAA Championships appearance, opened the day with an 8-0 major decision over Missouri's Josh Edmond, seeded 26th in the bracket, picking up bonus points with a late takedown and riding time in his 2022 NCAA debut.

After dropped an 8-1 decision to Nebraska's Ridge Lovett, seeded No. 10, Heil will face No. 24 PJ Ogunsanya of Army West Point on Friday.

After taking an 11-4 loss to No. 9 Zach Braunagel of Illinois in his opener, Hopkins, the No. 24 seed at 184, bounced back with a pin over Virginia's Michael Battista, seeded 25th, Thursday night. The second-time NCAA qualifier worked a quick reversal and locked in a cradle in the first period fall (1:42).

Hopkins will next meet No. 10 Taylor Venz of Nebraska.

Ghadiali rallied for his first career NCAA Championships victory late Thursday night. The 15-seed, trailing 4-2 entering the third period, registered three takedowns in the final 1:15 of regulation to force overtime, and tacked on a final takedown just 15 seconds into extra time for the 10-8 win.

The second time NCAA qualifier fell to No. 18 Lewis Fernandes of Cornell in a tightly contested 4-0 decision to open the tournament. Ghadiali will match up with No. 16 Zach Elam of Missouri on Friday.

Campbell's No. 28 seed Korbin Meink at 125 pounds, No. 33 Domenic Zaccone at 133 and No. 22 Shannon Hanna at 141 also competed in Thursday's opening round, going 0-2, eliminated from the field.

2022 marked the fourth straight season that Campbell has sent at least six qualifiers to the NCAA Championships.

Friday's first session will get underway at 11:00 a.m., carried live on ESPNU.
