BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Belle Martire posted a game-high nine points to lead visiting William & Mary over Campbell 20-15 Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The Tribe moves to 3-5 on the season, while Campbell falls even to 3-3, dropping its home opener.
Martire tallied three goals with six assists for the Tribe, while Sam Van Gieson scored five goals with an assist off the bench.
William & Mary came out of the gates with a seven goal first period, extending the lead to 8-2 on Van Gieson's first score of the day, assisted by Martire, to open the second frame. Campbell cut the lead to 10-7 with 3:17 to go before the half on a
Rasa Welsh score, but the Tribe answered, wrapping a five goal run around the break, including three straight from Van Gieson.
Martire's third goal of the afternoon gave the Tribe an 18-10 lead with 12:37 to play in the game, and William & Mary held off a late charge from the Camels for the 20-15 road win.
Lauren Russell also scored four goals with four ground balls for William & Mary, while Ainsley Huizenga notched four points on two goals and two assists. Elise Palmer snagged 19 saves in goal, withstanding 47 total Campbell shots, adding four ground balls.
Megan Matthews led Campbell with five points on two goals and three assists, with
Ally Heath scoring three goals to go with an assist.
Julianna Sanchez,
Sam Bischoff and
Joslin Hanbury also recorded three points apiece for CU. Sanchez also tallied 14 draw controls, while Bischoff posted seven draw controls, three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Chandler Stewart paced the Campbell defense with four caused turnovers and three ground balls, while
Emma Strickland made 11 saves with three ground balls.
