Campbell rallies for 6-3 win over USC Upstate

Camels pick up win on ESPNU

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - A three-run home run by Kayla Fredendall in the sixth was the difference as Campbell rallied for a 6-3 win over USC Upstate, Sunday at Cyrill Stadium.

Campbell (14-9, 3-3), making its national TV debut on ESPNU, avoided the series sweep and handed USC Upstate (24-3, 4-2) its third loss of the season.

In a combined effort by Campbell pitchers, Kayla Howald earned her second start of the Eason throwing three innings and striking out two. Howald notably got Campbell out of an early bases loaded jam in the second inning before Isabella Smith relieved her in the fourth inning.

The Spartans struck first as Tiffany Domingue hit a leadoff home run in the fourth inning and scored another run later in the inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Delaney McDilda brought the Camels within one run on her solo blast to left center in the 5th inning.

Campbell completed its rally in the sixth inning as Claudia Ware singled to left field and Bri Bryant, in her first start this season, rocked one up the middle to put two on. Fredendall entered as a pinch hitter and knocked one dead center to give the Camels its first lead of the day.

The Camels added insurance runs in the seventh as a wild pitch followed by a sacrifice bunt from Danielle Northrup scored two more.

Upstate began its own rally after connecting on three hits and scoring a run with two outs in the seventh before Smith forced the last batter to fly out.

The Spartans left eight runners on base and had one error. Campbell left one on base and committed two errors in the win.

Smith (5-5) picked up the win in relief after scattering three hits and allowing just one earned run in four innings of work.

Hannah Houge (15-2) took the loss for the Spartans in a complete game, giving up six hits and four earned runs while striking out nine.
