BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jada Preston scored her fifth goal of the game with just 20 seconds left, and Danielle Burke saved a free position shot with less than a second to play to lift Gardner-Webb to a 15-14 win over Campbell Saturday in the first round of the Big South Conference women's lacrosse championship at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The fifth-seeded Runnin' Bulldogs (10-8) advance to Friday's 4:00 p.m. semifinal at top seed High Point. Second seed Mercer will meet third seed Furman in the 7:00 p.m. semi.
Gardner-Webb withstood a furious Camel rally in the last five minutes. GWU led 14-11 after Bria Foley scored with 5:01 to play. However,
Sam Bischoff,
Joslin Hanbury and
Lexi McDaniel scored to draw Campbell (10-7) even with 1:29 to play.
Foley then controlled the ensuing draw and GWU was able to play for the decisive goal with the shot clock turned off. Lauren Deaver notched her 28th assist of the season on Preston's 51st goal for what proved to be the game winner.
Bischoff finished the day with six points on three goals and three assists. The Big South midfielder of the year, Bischoff ended the season with 55 goals and 14 assists.
Julianna Sanchez, who missed the last month with an injury, returned and scored three goals off the bench, while
Megan Matthews had four assists to run her season total to 32.
GWU jumped to a 4-1 lead before the Camels drew within one (7-6) at halftime. Campbell scored three-straight to take a 10-8 lead after Bischoff's goal with 3:58 to play in the third quarter. However, Gardner-Webb ran off five unanswered goals.
Saturday's victory was Gardner-Webb's first in eight tries all time against the Camels, who tied a school record for single season victories.
