FARMVILLE, VA. - Longwood defeated Campbell 3-2 in the first game of the Big South Championship final Saturday night at Lancer Field, forcing a winner-take-all game for the conference title tomorrow at 10:00 AM.
After Campbell (36-17) posted a 2-0 lead, Longwood (34-23) ended the game by scoring three unanswered runs to force another game.
Campbell struck first as the Lancers made an error on a ball hit into play by Delaney McDilda, allowing Savannah White to touch home in the third inning.
Claudia Ware added another run the following inning in a bases loaded situation after her hit rolled just inside the foul line towards first base, freezing the Longwood defense and allowing Alexa Pagano to score.
The Lancers would respond with runs in the next three innings, capped off by a go-ahead solo home run by Lauren Taylor in the seventh.
Georgeanna Barefoot allowed just three hits, no earned runs and struck out four in five innings of work. Isabella Smith (15-8) relieved Barefoot to start the sixth inning, giving up two earned runs and striking out four.
Sydney Backstrom (23-12) picked up the win in the circle for the Lancers after tossing four relief innings, allowing two hits and striking out six. Er'ron Burton started the game for Longwood, going three innings allowing one hit and two walks.
Ware finished 2-for-2 with two walks and a RBI batting from the leadoff spot while White went 1-for-1 with a run and two walks.
The Camels committed a season-high seven errors in the loss despite stranding 12 Longwood runners on bases throughout the game.
The loss marked just the second time this season Campbell has dropped a game after holding a lead through the completion of any particular inning.
