Three Camels advance to day two at NCAA Championships

TULSA, OKLA. – Three Campbell wrestlers earned Thursday wins, advancing to day two of the 2023 NCAA Championships, hosted at the BOK Center.

No. 19 Domenic Zaccone at 133 pounds, No. 24 Levi Hopkins at 197 and 17th-ranked heavyweight Taye Ghadiali all picked up day one victories to move on.

After dropping a 7-2 decision to Iowa State's No. 14 Zach Redding in the opening round, Zaccone used a second period near fall, adding an escape and another takedown to go ahead 9-1, then locked in a cradle and a pin (6:40) to top No. 30 Ethan Rotondo from Cal Poly.

The 133 pounder will square off against No. 13 Jesse Mendez from Ohio State in Friday's consolation bracket.

Hopkins advanced to day two with his second win this season over Virginia's Michael Battista, seeded No. 25. Hopkins took a 5-4 lead over Battista midway through the second period and held on, adding an escape in the third for his first career NCAA tournament win.

Hopkins will meet Cornell's Jacob Cardenas, seeded 10th, on Friday.

Ghadiali started the day with a 3-1 overtime win over No. 16 Tate Orndorff from Ohio State. The CU heavyweight, wrestling in his third NCAA Championships, battled Orndorff to a 1-1 deadlock through regulation, then used a single to secure the sudden victory takedown and advance in the championship bracket.

In session two, Ghadiali matched up with Michigan's top-ranked Mason Paris for the second time this season, taking his first loss of the tournament in a 6-1 decision. The redshirt junior will face No. 18 Josh Heindselman from Oklahoma on Friday.

At 141 pounds, No. 27 Shannon Hanna, and No. 27 Caleb Hopkins at 184, meanwhile, were both eliminated from competition, going 0-2 on the day. Hanna is a back to back NCAA qualifier, while Hopkins has qualified in each of the last three seasons.
