RADFORD, VA. - Alyssa Henault earned a hit-by-pitch with base loaded to give Campbell an 11-10 walk-off victory over USC Upstate at the Big South Championship.
The No. 2 seeded Camels improve to 39-15 after scoring a season-high 11 runs off 16 hits. No. 3 USC Upstate drops to 37-16 overall and will play in an elimination game Friday at 11 AM.
Both teams combined for 21 runs and 31 hits in a game that lasted 2 hours and 55 minutes. Overall, the game featured six lead changes and three ties.
Mariana Rodriguez drove in go-ahead runs in the fifth and tied the game at 9-9 in the sixth with a two-RBI single that hit off the top of the glove of Upstate's third baseman and over into left field.
The Spartans took a 10-9 lead in the top of the seventh until Savannah White tied the game again with an RBI triple down the right field line.
In the eighth inning, Madilyn Gillespie recorded a double after the Spartans' centerfielder failed to make a diving catch. Delaney McDilda froze the defense with a bunt while Rodriguez took a walk to load the bases. In the next at bat, Alyssa Henault took the first pitch off the side of her helmet to give Campbell the walk-off victory.
Henault finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a walk and a season-high four RBI.
Claudia Ware went 3-for-4 with three runs while tying the all-time program record with her 111th career walk. Tyra Parker, who made a catch against the wall in left field, went 2-for-3 with one run, walk and RBI.
Every Camel starter recorded at least one hit.
Isabella Smith (27-9) picked up her 27th win of the year marking a new Campbell single-season record. The Big South Pitcher of the Year started the game and recorded three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
Alyssa Kelly (19-10) took the loss for USC Upstate, giving up five earned runs off 12 hits while walking five in 6.0 innings.
Campbell will play the winner of No. 1 Longwood and No. 4 Charleston Southern on Friday at 1 PM.
