Campbell heads to Drexel Saturday

Camels set for first CAA road match

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell heads to Drexel on Saturday for its first-ever CAA road match. Kickoff from Vidas Field is set for 1:00 PM and will be broadcast on FloFC. The Camels are unbeaten (0-0-3) to start the season while Drexel is coming off its first loss of the year.

LAST TIME OUT: Campbell - Remained unbeaten on the season with a 1-1 draw at UNC Greensboro on Tuesday. Adrien Gameiro scored in the 89th minute on a goal that went through the legs of the UNCG keeper. Drexel - Suffered a 2-1 loss at Charleston to open CAA play after allowing the game winner with 40 seconds remaining in the second half. Harrison Coron scored in the 78th minute for the Dragons who were out-shot 16-8 on the day.

SCOUTING DREXEL: Picked seventh in the CAA preseason poll, Drexel enters Saturday's match with an 1-1-1 overall record. The Dragons are 0-1-0 in conference play after falling 2-1 at Charleston last Saturday. Four different Dragons have scored this season while Cesar Banacloy leads the team with two assists. Drexel is led by first year head coach Mark Fetrow.

SERIES HISTORY: Saturday marks just the second meeting between Campbell and Drexel. The Camels won 5-0 in the first meeting between teams during the 1993 season.

HESS CONNECTION: Former Campbell head coach Doug Hess (2002-09) was also head coach at Drexel for 10 seasons from 2010 to 2019. A two-time A-Sun head coach of the year, Hess led Campbell to its first NCAA College Cup appearance in 2007 and its first-ever season-ending national ranking (No. 25 by Soccer America) in 2008. Across his 10 seasons at Drexel, Hess steered the Dragons to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2012 and 2013.

ATLANTIC REGION POLL: Campbell checked into the latest United Soccer Coaches Atlantic region poll at 7. Five other CAA teams joined the Camels in the rankings including 1. Hofstra, 2. Delaware, 5. Charleston, 6. UNCW and 9. Northeastern.

POINTS LEADERS: Three different Camels (Gameiro, Yousfi, Lossec) have scored in each of the three games so far this season. Yousfi, who scored the first goal of the season in a 1-1 draw against South Carolina, also has an assist on Lossec's goal against Delaware.

SILVERWARE COUNT AT SIX SINCE 2018: Between regular season and tournament titles, Campbell has won six overall since 2018 (Big South Double: 2019 & 2021, Big South Tournament: 2018, Big South regular season: 2022).

HOME, SWEET HOME: The Camels stand 32-4-9 in their last 45 matches overall at the Eakes Complex, including a 0-0-2 mark this season.  Under 9th-year Coach Dustin Fonder, Campbell is 47-19-10 in Buies Creek.

HEAD COACH DUSTIN FONDER (Roanoke, '94) is in his ninth season at Campbell (84-48-20 overall, 43-17-5 Big South/CAA).  His overall head coaching record stands at 162-111-38, including a 78-63-18 mark in eight seasons at High Point. In 2022, Fonder led Campbell to claim the Big South regular season title, the program's third in last four years, behind a 6-1-1 conference record. He has guided CU to 6 Big South trophies and 3 NCAA appearances (2018, 2019, 2021) over the past five seasons.
